What Makes A Trained Leader?

Adult leaders in units are considered fully trained and eligible to wear the official Trained emblem, once they have completed the following courses:

Youth Protection:  New leaders are required to take Youth Protection Training within 30 days of registering and before volunteer service with youth begins. Youth Protection Training must be completed every two years to remain current.

This is Scouting:  An introduction to and over-view of the Boy Scouts of America and Cub Scouts.

Fast Start Orientation (appropriate for your position):  An orientation training for your volunteer position you can take to get you started before Position-Specific is available.  This training is available for Cubmaster, Committee Member, Den Leader and ScoutParents Unit Coordinator.

Leader Position Specific training:  The main course necessary to be considered “trained” for your Scouting position.  This training is available for Cubmaster, Pack Committee, Pack Trainer, Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos Leaders.

These courses can be taken on-line at the BSA's eLearning site.  They can also be taken in person at various times during the year.  Assistant Leaders take the same training as their primary counterparts.

The following classes are recommended but not required:

BALOO - Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (classroom)
OWLS - Outdoor Webelos Leaders Skills (classroom)
Weather Hazards (on-line)
Safe Swim  (on-line)
Safety Afloat  (on-line)
Climb Safely  (on-line)

For on--line training, go to www.scouting.org and click MyScouting > Create an account and log in > Click
E-Learning at the left > Select Cub Scout > Choose.  You can add your BSA ID number to your account profile when you get it later.
